Whitecaps Win Home Opener vs Toronto FC

The Supporters were out in full force.  The picture you see above, is courtesy of the Curva Collective supporters.  It was very impressive.

Whitecaps played Toronto FC  on their home opener for the second time and just like tradition, they beat them to a win of 1-0.  The only goal came from Gershon Koffie in the second half.

After the first five minutes of play, an injury occured to Captain, Jay DeMerit.  He suffered a ruptured achillies tendon. After undergoing a successful surgery, he tweeted from his hospital bed.

Our fearless Captain will be out for the remainder of the season healing.  He's also getting married this summer to Ashleigh McIvor.  Get well, Jay!

I didn't work for Whitecaps this shift.  For the month of March I will be working as a Host in Section 242.  I get to watch match again just like my Swangard days when I ushered the Grand Stand.

When I start my shifts with the Whitecaps in April, I will be in a new position this year.  I am the Volunteer Development and Recognition Coordinator.   So, I have actually been busy coming up with new and exciting ideas to keep the volunteer crew excited and engaged for this season.  I'm so ready for this challenge.

Anyways, there's a game on later today.  So, I better get some sleep.  Its 4:30am right now and I need to get up early and head down to BC Place for my shift at 2pm.  Whitecaps vs Columbus Crew!  This should be an easy game for our 'Caps!

Canucks to Wear Millionaire Kit on March 16th!

Since Ryan Kesler's been sidelined again with a fractured foot, he's found some spare time on his hands to model the Vancouver Millionaires Kit the team will be wearing on March 16th!

Here are some pics of the team also in the kits at a recent photo shoot.

The Giant or Kevin Bieksa?

So, this is what Bieksa was up to during the NHL lockout.  He lent his face to animation world. Not.  But it is a great likeness to him.  It makes me smile when I see it.  Its his angry face.  :)

I miss him.  Out with a groin injury.  Canucks have won only 1 out of their last 6 games.  The only game they won was when Bieksa came back early after missing two games from the injury vs LA Kings.  3 Losses after.  Coincidence?  Team obviously needs him.  Heal fast and come back asap! They don't have anyone to tie up the goal or get the game winner!!!

I have a feeling Juice will play against the Columbus Blue Jackets on this road trip.  Could use him in Minny, though. Oh well.

Vancouver to Host Grey Cup 2014!

It was officially announced this morning that 102nd Grey Cup 2014 will be hosted by Vancouver.  Rumours started swirling earlier this year that Ottawa, who was supposed to host next year's Grey Cup, would not be able to due to their stadium not being completed in time for the event.  So, naturally, it had to come back west and it was agreed that Vancouver was going to host it for the 2nd time in 4 years.

I had worked on the Grey Cup Events Management Team in 2011 when we last hosted it.  I had a blast.  I know that when we get our team going again, its going to be another fantastic event made that way by the fans and the volunteers that I've worked with for so many years now.

Great memories of the win....

NHL Heritage Classic coming to Vancity 2014

So, the March 2014 NHL Heritage Classic is rumoured to be held in our beautiful city of Vancouver.  The venue of course will be BC Place.  At least we can be warm and dry.  BC style.  Why suffer like the rest of the country does?  Take advantage our west coast weather.  The cities in question is between Edmonton and Vancouver but seeing as Edmonton recently had one, it will more than likely be Vancouver's turn to host.

I can't wait since I work at BC Place as a Host.  I'll get to see it all happen.  If I got to pick the two teams I want to go head to head here, it would be the Vancouver Canucks (obviously) and the Winnipeg Jets.  Just because we don't get to play them very often and because the eastern fans living in BC can be annoying at games (ie, Toronto).

So lets hope the Heritage Classic looks like this.

The Stanley Cup Visits Surrey!

So, I found out through Twitter that the Stanley Cup was making a visit to the Surrey Sport and Leisure Centre on Februrary 24th.  I was all over that.  My friend, Nadine and I, were planning a get together on the weekend for a movie but when I heard the Stanley Cup was coming, I asked her if she would like to accompany me to see the cup since she's also a huge hockey fan.  Unfortunately, she's a Winnipeg Jets fan.  I guess its better than being a Chicago Blackhawks fan.  So, I don't mind it as much. :)

This event was put on by the ScotiaBank Girls Hockey Events.  The cup was open to the public from 12:30-4:30pm.  First five hundred people in line got their pics taken professionally.  When Nadine and I arrived at the Rec Centre, there was already a line up.  But it wasn't bad.  Only 5 people ahead of us.  Mind you, we were also two and a half hours early.  So, we patiently waited in line with the other 5 people and made friends with the girls behind us.  Initially I wasn't going to wear my Canucks Bieksa jersey as I had on a green Canucks t-shirt and leather jacket.  But in the end, after seeing so many other people wearing their jerseys, I caved and went back to my car and put on my jersey.

With only half an hour left, we could tell there was activity going on.  We could smell indian food and the girls hockey team were in position to greet the cup.

The cup was escorted by two RCMP officers, wearing their red serges for the event. Along with the two NHL Stanley Cup handlers wearing white gloves.  They walked up the steps and right by me where I was able to take the picture up top.  They went straight into a multi-purpose room and set it up.  Soon after we were able to go in.  We were greeted with the smell of indian food.  The lineup took us first into the food tent where they had Vegetable somosas, pakoras, Chicken somosas and for a little sweetness, there was Gulab Jamun and Jelebi.  I took a vegatable somosa and a gulab jamun.  You had to be able to finish the food before you got to the Stanley Cup line.  The next tent the line up took us through was the email line.  Two girls with ipads stood there taking down your first name and your email address.  This information was then scanned onto a card with a barcode on it.  This card was then given to me and I was to give it to the lady at the front taking professional pics of fans with the Stanley Cup.  As I waiting in line, Nadine had gone up to get her pic taken.

Once she was done, it was my turn.  I handed the lady my card and went up to take my picture.  Once I was done, I headed back to where Nadine was standing and we decided there wasn't much else there for us.  Only a shootout tent and fastest shot tent.  So, we headed out to Central City Brewing to watch the Canucks vs. Detroit Red Wings game.  Wished I hadn't watched that a my 'Nucks lost 8-3.  Not good.

The next morning I received an email from Nadine telling me that her picture had been emailed to her earlier that morning. I eagerly started looking through my emails as well cause surely if Nadine got her, I would of had one sent to me too.  I was wrong.  I even checked my junk mail.  So, I thought, well, maybe it will come later that day.  No dice.  Of course, Nadine was bummed cause it was my idea to go in the first place and I didn't get my picture.  So, I got Nadine to send me the email they sent her so I could contact them about my picture.  Eventually, a few days passed and I still hadn't received a reply back.  So, I went on facebook and found the ScotiaBank Hockey Club page and was able to contact someone there about it.  A few days later I had  reply to my email sent a week before that they had found it!  It was sent to me right away.  It wasn't my best picture. I had curled my hair earlier but the rain had dampened it down. Doesn't look right in this pic. I also wasn't really ready for it cause it was so rushed but its probably the only time I'll be able to get close the Cup since the Canucks don't seem to eager to win it anytime soon.

In any case, a big thank you to Scotiabank Events for taking the time to find my lost picture. I very much appreciate it even though it took a week to find it! :)
